I provide technical support for an academic department at a large university. We have a virtualized Novell NetWare 6.5 SP8 server and all was well with the world. In July, I had a new hire insist on buying a Mac, the first in this department. Despite the fact that I told her at that time that I wouldn't support it, I find myself spending all sorts of time trying to get her connected to two server volumes to which she needs access.
My first idea was to install a new SLES 10.3 SP4/OES 2 SP3 server and integrate it into our existing tree. All went well with the installation, and the Kanaka server was easy to setup. I was afraid that it wouldn't allow to me share NetWare volumes, but it did. I couldn't get her Mac to connect that way, however, and posting to the Novell Kanaka forum produced zero replies. My post:

I did a little more reading and found where I should be able to connect from her Mac using a command prompt and the 'afp://' command. Now I don't have a Mac to use to test this. She (my faculty member) bought an air book and takes it with her when she's not here. It looks to me like this should be just about identical to using the 'mount_afp' command at a Linux command prompt. I attempted to do this today.
As root on a Linux box, I created a directory called /Volumes/SYS to use as a mount point for my NetWare SYS volume. I wanted to remain root to remove the possibility of permission problems on the client.
I used this command (again, as root):
mount_afp afp://testuser:Batman1@128.194.###.###/ECON-VIRTUAL-NW.SYS /Volumes/SYS
'Batman1' is the correct password for this account, and I have set it as the simple password as well. Here is the output from the command:
Mounting 128.194.###.### from ECON-VIRTUAL-NW.SYS on /Volumes/SYS
Could not open volume
Could not mount volume ECON-VIRTUAL-NW.SYS
I would greatly appreciate any advice as to what I can do to get this process to work... or even advice on how to get Kanaka to work.
Thank you!
