So, I am trying to go back in time and play with old protocols. However, I lack a TARDIS, so installing NW4.2 into a virtual machine seems like the next best thing. I finally got SPXII traffic generated to see what it looks like (and filed a WireShark bug on it to dissect it properly), so now I want to get TCP/UDP encapsulated in IPX (RFC1791 and all). I know from past posts that I need one of several products: MPR31, BM3.6, or NIAS4. I cannot find the latter two anywhere, but I have found MPR31's files within the NW4SPx files, and it looks like it's just a couple of NLMs. So I copied these NLMs into my SYS:\SYSTEM directory in my NW4.2 virtual machine, got confused and then resolved the INETCFG hoopla where you have to use the versions from NW4SP7 to even configure the IPX Gateway. But, after that, I am lost.
What do I need to do to bring this IPX Gateway mess online for this server and then get a client (in this case, Windows 98 running Novell Client 3.4) to translate IPX -> IP and back again (like, NAT for IPX or something)? I know that from reading this article, I need to configure the gateway object in NWADMIN, but after installing the IPXGW3X.DLL snap-in for NWADMIN3X and bringing up the property sheet for the -GW object, I cannot do anything. It's like the DLL file isn't loading (but I know it is). What do I need to do to fix that?
Next, what do I need to do for the client? I think, if I am reading things right, that I may have to downgrade the Novell Client from 3.4 to something older, like 3.2 or earlier, then copy winsock replacement files in that handles the IP interdiction and wraps/unwraps them in IPX. But I cannot find these replacement client files anywhere, and I am not sure where to even begin looking for Novell Clients older than 3.4.
I did pickup an Intranetware 4.11 CD set on eBay for really cheap. Will that potentially have everything I need, and will NIAS4 from that play nice with NW4.2?
Barring that, is it possible to get BorderManager 3.6 somewhere for personal use/experimentation/self-learning? I also have NW5.1SP8, NW6.0SP5, and NW6.5SP8 media if one of those has a product on it to do this IP<-->IPX gateway thing.
Of note, I have learned, through much googling, that the history of the IPX/IP Gateway and NIAS is a bit convoluted.
