NSS Pool Creation Error

I am running OES11 SP1 and trying to create a pool on a RAID-5 disk array (/dev/md3) that was created outside of nssmu. I am assuming that nss would see this as a hardware array and under the pool creation it does see md3, but when I try to create the pool, I get "error 23331: create_dm_group_object error sending device mapper ioctl"

any thoughts or suggestions?
