IS GROUPWISE EMAIL AUTOMATICALLY ENCRYPTED/SECURE

I understand that Groupwise email is encrypted in the Domain and this is setup automatically.

Is the email encrypted after it leaves our domain to the Internet? What ensures the email to be secure from a GW server to an Exchange server?

If there is a setting where do I check? I did not set up the server.
