Configuring user source- only use SSL type connection

When configuring a user source I receive the following error:
The wizard cannot continue for the following reason:
The connection specified is configured to only use SSL type connections:

Connection name : server1
address: 159.247.123.123
Port 389
Checked add connection to al primary servers

server1 is SUSe 11.2

zenworks server 11.1

Connects fine to Netware servers
Can LDAP browse server1 either port 389 636

What do I look at next?
